Chin hairs and ethical email marketing

“Arrr, there ya go, ya bastarrrrd!”

Chin up, I stand an inch away from the mirror, tweezers held tight in my right hand with a sense of victory, making my best impression of a Scotsman (but sounding more like a pirate with a slight speech impediment).

Ah, the joy of finally plucking a hair chin out is unmatched.

The relief!

If you’ve never experienced an unwelcome, thick hair breaking through your chin, lucky you!

Maybe you're more familiar with the sigh you let out when you step out of a toilet after really needing to use one but not having one around for what seems like hours.

Or that moment at the end of a long day when you finally undo your bra and can exhale.

Or the feeling after having a good, cleansing cry, the one that's been building up for longer than you're willing to admit.

And if you do have this unwanted encounter with chin hairs every few weeks, you know how frustrating it is to feel it.

To not being able to get it out when the discomfort hits.

To play it cool in front of others when the only thing that's on your mind is that there’s a single strand of hair stuck deep in your chin and you’re dying to get it out - and how the hell can such a tiny thing impact your entire wellbeing so much?!

I see the same discomfort when I talk to people about email marketing.

They move uncomfortably in their seats as if I’ll be judging them (I never do!).

“We don’t send a lot of emails,” they almost twitch, “because we don’t know what to send. And we don’t want to annoy our subscribers.”

“I understand that,” I always answer, “I hear that a lot, but it’s not for everyone either.”

“But we know it’s important,” they’re quick to defend themselves.

Look, I’m not here to convince you to email your list or do so more consistently. You know how important that is and why yourself, otherwise you wouldn’t have been on this list in the first place.

But I have seen a total shift in the expression of such business owners and in-house marketers before and after having one hour of consultation with me.

How all the muscles in their face relax because they finally know which exact stories to tell and what to focus on in each newsletter.

When they end up our conversation with a list that turns email marketing into a sustainable, consistent effort, and a part of their business that they look forward to.

When they see that asking for the sale is simple and aligns with their values.

When they feel like they have the tools to grow their list with their people.

It’s the same relief I feel when I manage to pluck out a chin hair I’ve been working on for days.

Whether you’re running your business or work as an in-house marketer and this all sounds too familiar - email marketing doesn’t need to feel like that chin hair stuck in your business for good.

If you want to finally make email marketing work in your business the way you want to do it, let’s find that relief for you together.
